Controller Names and the nonControl Attribute

Submitted by:brandelan brandelan
I do wish the controllers' names had a more unique name for wildcard searches. As it is, they just end in C. That's really hard to search for effectively with mel. If it were CTRL or something more unique, certain other scripts I use would be able to work with your rig better. I noticed you add a "nonControl" attribute to curves that aren't control curves, but it's not 100% consistent as the roll curves don't have that attribute. If every curve that wasn't a control curve had that attribute that would be helpful for external mel scripts too.

Hey, I have always tried to keep names short, but I can definitely see the point of more descriptive names. I am going to make that change. Which roll curves are you referring to that do not have that attribute? -Dustin

Cool! I'd imagine you'd have to do some kind of deal where you'd allow us to choose what name we'd want? I can imagine that if your rig defaults to a brand new naming convention, it'd cause problems for referenced animations that were using the old control names. The attributes without the nonControl that seemed like they might need them were the TwistSplineIKCurves, UpperCurveAttach (legs/arms), UpperCurveGuide (legs/arms), LowerCurveAttach (legs/arms), LowerCurveGuide (legs/arms) SplineCurve (of the fingers), Neck_LengthCurve. I use the red9 animation toolkit, and it allows you to filter the rig's hierarchy and select the root's children based on user-defined criteria. If all those curves had the nonControl tag, it'd help my filtering. :) Thanks!

I uploaded version 1.3.0 which has the following naming convention changes: C>Ctrl G>Grp J>Jnt This should help you in the future but it will mean older rigs will have problems. I try to limit the number of times I make major changes like this but as this is a fairly new product, it is inevitable. I also added the "nonControl" attribute to those nurbsCurves. Thanks for the feedback, and let me know if this takes care of all the issues you were having. -Dustin

Is there any way to convert an old proxy rig to the new naming scheme to generate my skeleton from? EDIT: Oh, wait, I see. I used your tool to save my proxy set up, deleted the old proxies, then re-loaded the saved setup and now it has the proper naming conventions!

Yes, your old proxies are fine. The only issue is that old rigs won't be able to use the new RRM Selector UI.
